Lulubaby Antenatal and Postnatal Classes
Lulubaby Antenatal and Postnatal Classes were set up at the beginning of this year by sisters-in-law Louisa Van den Bergh and Mary Van der Westhuizen. We enjoyed meeting and chatting in Louisa’s lovely family house this summer. They provide excellent six week courses, which are now run in three places: Fulham, Wandsworth and the top floor of Peter Jones, Sloane Square. Louisa is a breastfeeding counsellor and Mary is a nutritionist, and they have a great team of maternity specialists to help them. These include a senior midwife Victoria Cochrane, who we know and highly recommend, a consultant obstetrician, consultant anaesthetist, paediatrician, GP, and obstetric physiotherapist.
Lulubaby offer morning or evening sessions. They run a mixture of couples and women only classes, with a maximum of 10 per class. Home-made cakes and tea are served, with plenty of time to chat and make friends. This is one of the huge benefits of a friendly antenatal group. We have often seen good friendships develop between new mums which helps enormously during the early weeks and months of motherhood. Adapting to your new life as a mother can be difficult, and those who have friends with babies of the same age will find it much easier, as well as enjoyable and fun.
Kensington Midwives highly recommend joining Lulubaby as Louisa and Mary are passionate about providing the best possible preparation to expectant mothers. Louisa told us “We are always here for mums, happy to answer any questions they may have – from what pram they should buy to how to deal with sore nipples…this ongoing support is often mentioned as what sets us apart from our competitors.” Classes also cover caring for the newborn, feeding, soothing and how to respond to their needs when, for example, your baby is unwell. This is an excellent start, as it gives new parents the confidence they need.
The courses are popular, so they advise you book early. If you can’t get on one of their antenatal courses, they also offer other postnatal sessions including paediatric first aid with their GP, weaning with nutritionist Mary, sleep and toddler behaviour. These would be helpful, interesting and beneficial to all mothers looking after small children, even if only to talk together, compare and share stories, learn from each other and feel well supported by Lulubaby and a kind and friendly group.
